The first episode of the UNLEARN Podcast is now published

Image
After running the 'Let’s Talk About Supporting Teachers in Gender Diversity and Inclusion' webinar for educators, we got together for a debrief with Rachel who co-ran the session with me. We tried to ideate what would work better - getting teachers in one place simultaneously is tricky, even if PD is what they clearly wanted. Even based on the survey I'm now analysing the results of. Those results were what the webinar content was also based upon. We then ideated that we could create videos about topics that we'd love to share knowledge about, and then we realised that podcast would be even a better way to do that. That become the starting point of designing the UNLEARN podcast as a support solution for educators.  When you are excited, things move fast, so the first episode is out! Publishing the first episode of my podcast, UNLEARN , was deeply rewarding but also uniquely unsettling. I haven't felt this vulnerable in a long time. It wasn’t just about sharing conte...

Gender Diversity in Education GPT is ready for testing! Would you like to give it a go?

Image
The Gender Diversity in Education GPT for educators is there to help you to ask those questions about gender diversity and gender inclusion that you have on your mind.  -The results are crafted to line up with helpful guides from InsideOUT Kōaro and other education support providers in Aotearoa NZ.  Creating this GPT is part of my research and is one of the designed support solutions.  Keep in mind that the more honest you are in your questions and comments in that chat, the better the results. It is good for you to know that I can't see what you are chatting there ; it is  anonymous . That means that I can't tell if it is useful or not, so  I would love to fill in this feedback/feedforward form about your experience with this particular GPT . That would help us  know if a tool like this would be helpful for educators.  Thank you so much for your help for testing, and providing feedback and feedforward about the Gender Diversity in Education GPT ...

Ethics are now approved

Image
I can now start to gather data, since I have an ethics approval number - MCOR.9390.066! So EXciting!  Receiving the ethics approval number for my research signifies that my study has been reviewed and approved by the academyEX institutional ethics committee. This process ensures that our research adheres to ethical standards, particularly regarding the treatment of the participants. If you have never gone through an ethics approval, it is quite interesting, a journey full of learning and meaningful reflections.   The committee checks that your research follows the rules to protect anyone involved in the study. This includes making sure you treat people fairly and don’t harm them - so that everything is safe, fair and respectful. The committee also checked that my research followed the necessary rules to protect everyone involved, ensuring they would be treated fairly and not harmed.  Before anyone can take part in my study, I always need to explain what the research ...

Initial Research Timeline Ready to be Shared

I have had the privilege to talk with so many amazing people, even just during this planning phase of my research. These discussions have helped me draft a research proposal and drafts about the ethical principles  to identify and mitigate risks associated with my work. My data gathering starts with a survey. I will  ask our  academyEX educator alumni  for their help in understanding the teachers' need for support and potential barriers to this change . I will also ask them to identify early adopters of gender inclusion that could help me later in my research. (AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2024) Co-design and deliver a PD session based on the identified needs. The PD session is also an opportunity to gather more data, engage with the participants, test and ideate solutions around the barriers, and locate inspirational early adopters in this field. (OCTOBER 2025) I also plan to turn the data from the survey into meaningful evidence for future mahi (work). My plan is to...
