The first episode of the UNLEARN Podcast is now published
After running the 'Let’s Talk About Supporting Teachers in Gender Diversity and Inclusion' webinar for educators, we got together for a debrief with Rachel who co-ran the session with me. We tried to ideate what would work better - getting teachers in one place simultaneously is tricky, even if PD is what they clearly wanted. Even based on the survey I'm now analysing the results of. Those results were what the webinar content was also based upon. We then ideated that we could create videos about topics that we'd love to share knowledge about, and then we realised that podcast would be even a better way to do that. That become the starting point of designing the UNLEARN podcast as a support solution for educators.
When you are excited, things move fast, so the first episode is out!
Publishing the first episode of my podcast, UNLEARN, was deeply rewarding but also uniquely unsettling. I haven't felt this vulnerable in a long time. It wasn’t just about sharing content; it was about taking a stand in this field that is often full with with mixed reactions, especially in the current climate where discussions around gender can quickly become contentious. But these things are simple, that's what I've learned. Or unlearned, and it is not easy to let go. To let go of our privilege and power.
Recording that episode was a moment of courage for me, facing the possibility of criticism or misunderstanding in hopes of building something positive and impactful for educators. Let's see how this all unfolds.
I found myself wrestling with self-doubt throughout the process, questioning if my message would resonate with educators. If I had the right words, or even if I was prepared to take on such a public role in fostering gender inclusivity. But as I reflected on the purpose—creating spaces for educators to learn and unlearn for the sake of their students' belonging—it felt it was my task to push through that discomfort. Whenever I feel the discomfort, I know that those with less power and privilege are not.
The journey from the early concept to publication was such an emotional one, but at the same time it was quick. I though that I have to be authentic. I can't sit on this for ages. Since this is about learning and unlearning, it needs to be genuine. Yes, I'll learn and unlearn more in the future - but thankfully podcast episodes have a time stamp.
This podcast isn't just a teaching tool; it's a part of my own learning journey. I am hooping it is a space where I’m inviting others to join me, even if they’re nervous about making mistakes. So am I, that's the whole point!
This podcast is one way for me to try to move beyond my cis-paralysis, which I, by the way, dared to talk about and briefly define in the first episode. The idea is now out there!
As I move forward, I hope this podcast will inspire others to have the courage to explore these important topics too. By embracing vulnerability, I’ve taken a small step toward helping others make classrooms safer and more inclusive for every student, and I'm hoping you'll join me by listening or perhaps even joining me in some of the episodes!
I created the podcast also it's own site - so you are welcome to check that out!
